I’m sitting on the train heading to the city of Sydney like I have done so many times before in the 3 years that was my life studying a degree in music, partially it seems blurry and unfulfilling but digging a little deeper there are memories that I will hold for a lifetime. Rehearsing with mates in desperation to competently perform in front of my peers comes to mind, there’s nothing more nerve racking than performing for fellow musicians, I’m sure that never changes no matter who you are.
Friends that endured the same painful classes of boredom and also the classes that would stretch your mental and musical capacity to the brink, confessions of impossibility and failure followed by hours and days and weeks of hard work to come out the other side victorious, “To the pub!”, to celebrate a minor milestone on sitting through an exam, we didn’t need to be told if we went well or otherwise, a drink was necessary in either case!
All in all it was a life changing experience in itself, not considering outside circumstances, it was a constant battle, an almost relentless demand of ones self to succeed, taking the lessons learnt and applying them to life, attempting to master your instrument in the hope that one day you will be awarded the prize that shows you really can do it, an acknowledgement of all the hours, days, weeks and years put into this one Endeavour and coming out the other side successful is definitely an achievement I would have scoffed at ten years ago.
Having said all that there’s no way it can be done alone, if not for my wife alone I highly doubt I would have completed the degree at all, let alone go on to do another, she gave me reason to keep going, acknowledging ones parents is a given in any success in life, they gave me a roof over my head and heck, they bought me my first 2 guitars!!!! What else do they need to do in life?
It’s a great day and I’m happy to be here on this journey, it’s a great milestone in my life as my lovely wife constantly reminds me, it is special but it’s only a small part of the journey…..
Stay tuned for more.
